'As History is Our
Witness', China is a More Reliable Friend than America
"And
since they've castigated Pakistan as an untrustworthy partner in the anti-terrorism
campaign, they expect all others to revile and abuse Pakistan as well. The Chinese
have made it clear they'll have none of it and will speak their minds honestly
and loudly, which their premier has so thankfully done."
A Pakistani soldier prepares to enter Mehran Naval Base, under attack by militants. The Taliban and al-Qaeda took responsibility for the attack, as an act of retribution for the demise of Osama bin Laden, May 23.
With Americans haughtily boxing
Pakistan into a corner, and their Western allies subtly working toward the same
end, China has again offered a heartening voice to Pakistan, just as it has whenever
our country has found itself in a distressful predicament.
In a straightforward talk, Chinese
Prime Minister Wen Jibao lauded Pakistan's contributions to the war against terrorism,
and urged the United States to acknowledge this and respect this country's
sovereignty. Of course, this hasn't gone down well with Washington's movers and
shakers. It is has drawn sniggers from their media and think tank mouthpieces. But
then just as their bandmasters, these drummers want everyone else in the world
to love who they love, hate who they hate, condemn whom they condemn and
eulogize who they eulogize.
And since they've castigated
Pakistan as an untrustworthy partner in the anti-terrorism campaign, they
expect all others to revile and abuse Pakistan as well. The Chinese have made
it clear they'll have none of it and will speak their minds honestly and loudly,
which their premier has so thankfully done.
Little wonder that for its
steadfastness and for standing by them through thick and thin, the people of
this country hold China in the highest esteem. And it's also no wonder that they
hold such a poor view of the United States for its habitual exploitation of
this nation to further its geopolitical objectives and disposal of it like garbage
when its ends are achieved.
History is our witness, and the
testimony damning. And it's no wonder, then, that across the political spectrum,
this country's people are livid with their leaders for putting all their eggs
in the unreliable and untrustworthy U.S. basket, neglecting a time-tested and
all-weather friend.
Indeed, Pakistanis are acidly
incensed at our leadership's serf-like slavishness to their American masters. If
the Americans have questions for Pakistan to answer, this country has questions
for them as well. And the people are extremely angered as to why has this
weakling government hasn't ventured to ask them.
The Americans are making much
about asking why for so long, Osama remained ensconced and uncaught in his
Abbottabad hideout. This certainly is intriguing. Indeed, it's as intriguing as
the way the September 11 hijackers received training in U.S. aviation academies
without being caught by any of the two dozen American intelligence agencies,
even as the terrorists and their co-conspirators plotted strikes in Europe -
who also went undetected, despite the close rapport of the Western spy services
and America's CIA.
More crucially, why did bin
Laden make good his escape when the U.S.-led coalition had invaded Afghanistan
primarily to dismantle his murderous al-Qaeda network and nab him dead or alive?
If their troop surge is working such wonders now, as they claim so triumphantly,
why didn't they make this surge at the outset; and why did they keep their puny
force immobile and barracked in Kabul and Bagram instead of going after the
fleeing rumps of al-Qaeda and Taliban?

Our people are flummoxed that
as the Americans and their Western allies paint us as sinners, our leaders don't
hold up these original sinners for pillory and punishment? Pakistanis are
miffed that while a vituperative tirade is directed at us from the U.S.
chambers because of the mythical aid they claim to be sending in such torrents,
why no one in Islamabad is clarifying the realities of this aid. Well, all
except Finance Minister Hafeez Sheikh, who did venture to do so when he said
that the talk of billions of dollars in aid was a myth.
But then, after realizing that
he may have treaded on some powerful toes, he pissed and bleated that he hadn't
used the word "myth." In any case, if despite spending roughly $12 billion
a month, $120 billion a year and some $1trillion over the past ten years, Americans
have failed spectacularly to pacify Afghanistan, 70 percent of which is still
under the sway of the Taliban and other insurgents, what greater feats should
they expect from Pakistan - even if they had given it $20 billion in aid over
the past decade?
And again - why have they
failed to nab or kill any of the 100 or so al-Qaeda fighters they themselves
say remain in Afghanistan? Or do they believe that such men are merely saying
prayers while those that they permitted to sneak into Pakistan, due to their
own cowardice, are the only evil-doers?
There is too much skullduggery
in America's pronouncements, stances and pretences, which should at least impel
our leaders to reconsider its America policy and understand who this country's
real friends are - and who are just wolves in a sheep's clothing.
