Iraq's Security Forces: 'Heroes of the Nation'

"Their determination sent a message of true jihad against the forces of evil. ... May Allah have pity on the martyrs of our forces and heal their wounds. History will remember them as the light that illuminated our path, so that Iraqis could follow in the footsteps of the civilized world."

A Sunni sheikh after voting in Sadr City: Can Iraq preserve security and democracy?

AL JAZEERA VIDEO: Inside Iraq - Iraqis pin their hopes on nationwide polls, Mar. 11, 00:24:09RealVideo

As pleased as I am at democracy and the tremendous electoral-wedding that the new Iraq experienced on March 7, I am just as happy about the way the heroes from every branch of the security services, whether the Interior Ministry, the Defense Ministry or others, stood against every attempt at sabotage by the brigades of hate operating under the miserable so-called al-Qaeda organization.

The participation of Iraqis in choosing their legal representatives was marvelous, and their determination sent a message of true jihad against the forces of evil. It opens a road full of optimism for building a prosperous Iraq that will be an example for all developing countries. This is all thanks to our courageous security men who, with their bare chests, confronted booby traps and suicide bombers to ensure that the banner of democracy in our Iraq remains aloft now and forever.

Many Iraqis, who for generations have been involved in Iraq's political process, see these successful elections as the goal of their long struggle. Elections are merely a political battle that swings back and forth among political parties and they need not frighten us, as long as the Iraqi Constitution guarantees that they are repeated every four years. And we need our security forces to develop quickly both in quantity and quality, so that they are capable of protecting the nation and ensuring its success and longevity.

Genuinely, the heroes of our security forces shut the mouths of the people of hate, who dispense accusations of racism and sectarianism. Our security forces have given all Iraqis confidence that despite terrorism's increasing ferocity, they have a shield protecting them.

May Allah have pity on the martyrs of our forces and heal their wounds. History will remember them as the light that illuminated our path, so that Iraqis could follow in the footsteps of the civilized world.

Thank you heroes - and I will repeat: Allah knows how well you have done and that you deserve the complete loyalty of the Iraqi government.
