Global ‘Passivity’ Over Syria will End in Disaster (Okaz, Saudi Arabia)
“Syrians who have risen up in a quest for freedom, dignity
and a happier life will fail to achieve them if the international community remains
passive after Assad’s fall. Syria and the entire region are headed toward a
very dangerous situation, as terrorist organizations expand and exploit the
crisis there.”
Sixteen bleeding months later, and the U.N. Security Council is
still unable to prevent the Syrian people from being caught up in their daily spiral
of death. Because of the complexity and danger of a situation in which the
interests of the global powers collide, it appears that nothing will be done, whether
it be under Chapter
VII of the U.N. Charter or anything else.
Now that the fall of Assad is inevitable, the Syrian issue will
take a more dangerous turn, since his departure is only the beginning if the
demands and needs of the Syrian people. Those who have risen up in a quest for
freedom, dignity and a happier life will fail to achieve them if the international
community remains passive after Assad’s fall. Syria and the entire region are
headed toward a very dangerous situation, as terrorist organizations expand and
exploit the crisis there.

Events like the raising of al-Qaeda flags over a number of
liberated areas, the appearance of organizations like the Mujahedeen Shura Council, the emergence of the term “The Al Sham Principality
[reference to a new caliphate],” along with information recently passed from a
Jordanian security source to a Saudi newspaper that Jordanian authorities have observed
approximately 6,000 al-Qaeda members crossing into Syria, are ringing alarm
bells in the region.
Al-Qaeda played no role in the formation of the revolution, nor has
it had a role in its later stages, but it is entering the fray at the end to
try and reap the harvest, after all the sacrifices made by the Syrian people to
ensure the success of their revolution and claim their just reward. As is its
habit, al-Qaeda is operating in a very Machiavellian way, its first mission
being to push aside the Free Syrian Army after accusing its members of being
infidels and committing treason. That phase will be a bloody
one, and while we might know where and when it starts, it is impossible to know
its range in terms of time or geography.
