'Wasn't Just Good
at Kissing'
"He kissed very well. It got
to the point that I enjoyed it so much, that I bought a book that taught how to
kiss … He was cute, a wonderful person. He loved walking with me. I called him
John, but I also called him my dear and my coconut
dessert."

caring and romantic." It wasn't exactly in these terms that last month,
the Republican Party presented Senator John McCain as their candidate for U.S.
Presidency. But that's the way Maria Gracinda Teixeira de Jesus, who lived
through a torrid romance with McCain in Rio de Janeiro during the 1950s, refers
to him. In 1999, the story of the two was told by the senator in his memoirs Faith
of My Fathers. In Teresópolis this Friday, O Globo Extra spoke with
the former model and ballerina
Although she's 77 years old,
Maria Gracinda still speaks proudly of the time when, at only 17-years-old, she
was Rio's Queen of Commerce in 1949, and in 1954, she was a candidate for Miss
Universe from the Federal District. The meeting with McCain occurred three
years later, in 1957. The model used to have lunch on the foreign vessels
docked in Praça Mauá. It was on one of them, the Vera Cruz, that she met
the-then American Navy Lieutenant, John Sydney McCain.

However, Maria Gracinda
preferred not to give details about the first time the two spoke. On the other
hand, she did reveal details about the relationship between her and today's
Republican senator.
-- "I had a convertible
Cadillac Eldorado, blue turquoise. I would pick John up at the ship and go out
with him. We went to Barra and even to my apartment on Avenida Rui Barbosa in
Flamento," she says.

-- "He was cute, a
wonderful person. He loved walking with me. I called him John, but I also

She also told some steamy
details of her steamy relationship with McCain.
-- "He kissed very well.
It got to the point that I enjoyed it so much, that I bought a book that taught
how to kiss," said Maria Gracinda, who didn't shrink from the question of
whether the two had had sex or not:
-- "What do you think?
Of course … He wasn't just good at kissing, he was good at everything,"
she says, laughing.

than 50 years, the former model still speaks warmly of her relationship with
the Republican.

But, he traveled away and it ended. Otherwise I might still be with him today.
Except that our lives were so different, I was a model and he was a soldier who
traveled a lot," she remembered, with a note of sadness.
-- "I'll never forget
him, but to imagine that he would write a book and talk of me, never."
Maria Gracinda has already
decided what to do if John McCain wins the race for the White House:
-- "I will send him a
telegram of congratulation, signed, 'Your great love from Brazil.'"
