Western Inaction in Syria is What Creates Extremists (Liberation, France)

"It is precisely this Western impotence that creates these extremists. It's no surprise that the opposition believes the great powers wish to allow Syrians to kill one another until their nation disappears as a state. For its failure to assist a country being murdered, the West will long pay a price."

The use of chemical weapons was to be our red line - and that included the United States - justifying intervention in Syria. But with the accumulation of ever-more precise accusations against Bashar al-Assad, Western resolution has weakened. Obama, just like the pathetic diplomacy of France and Europe, is looking for excuses to do nothing.

Who recalls President Hollande's promise last November to arm the opposition after recognizing it as the representative of the Syrian people? Once again, the Syrians have been left in the hands of armed torturers supported by Iran, Russia and China. Nothing has been done. Not for the 100,000 or so people killed, nor the tens of thousands tortured and imprisoned or the millions of displaced and made refugees. After the great hope of the Arab Spring, the killing has gone on for two years under the eyes of an international community that has let it be.

As shown by reports by Luc Mathieu, our special correspondent in Aleppo, humanitarian aid doesn't even reach the victims, where courageous citizens shout their rage against the West, and particularly against France. The good apostles who have never accepted or understood the liberation of Arab peoples cite the presence of Islamist fighters to justify their apathy. But it is precisely this Western impotence that creates these extremists. It's no surprise that the opposition believes the great powers wish to allow Syrians to kill one another until their nation disappears as a state. For its failure to assist a country being murdered, the West will long pay a price.
