"'Barack
Obama must learn to manage his relationship with humans,' goes the latest
Washington joke. He must agree to make a stopover on Earth before returning to
the stratosphere. … America remains committed to individual freedoms as the
apple of its eye. Obama still has two years to convince her that it's the same
for him, or to leave."
Barack Obama has many friends.
And now they're all rushing to lecture him or offer good advice. And what about
the progress of the last two years? This is true, say many a good soul today, but
it was poorly explained. Who knows whether the stimulus package, much reviled among
Republicans, helped save 3 million jobs? And who still questions the right of
every American child to be cared for, as the reform the health care system
proclaims and which was obtained with determination by the president?

With such lessons on the
past come advice for the future: Alter the team at the White House; Don't
hesitate to play the game of intrigue and allow your opponents to fall into a
trap of their own contradictions; Bide your time until the next election in
2012. And most importantly, get back in touch with America. "Barack Obama
must learn to manage his relationship with humans," goes the latest Washington
joke. He must agree to make a stopover on Earth before returning to the stratosphere.
Such good advice, except that
it's arriving a bit late, and leads one to forget that the U.S. president is now
only halfway through his term. Alone, Obama has had to defend both his own
record and that of his Democratic cronies. One indicator is striking: in
Washington on Saturday, what constituted the largest gathering of the Democratic
campaign took place in the absence of any responsible Democratic Party official.
It was hosted by Jon Stewart, certainly a talented TV comedian, but one who
spends his time making fun of the political system rather than finding ways to improve
it.
Without a way to defend them against
an over-the-top opposition which has been seduced by every kind of populism, the
policies advocated by Obama haven’t made headway in much of the country.
America remains committed to individual freedoms as the apple of its eye. Obama
still has two years to convince her that it's the same for him, or to leave.
