What
Palestinians Can Expect from Obama: 'Nothing' (Le Quotidiend'Oran, Algeria)
"Even
if it is Washington's stated goal, reviving a 'peace process' in clinical death
is not the purpose of the U.S. president's visit. Rather than as a leader of
the world's greatest power, Obama arrives in Israel 'repentant,' having been publicly
rebuffed and humiliated by the Israeli prime minister during his first-term, and
therefore, determined not to allow it to happen again."
Palestinians expect nothing new to arise
from U.S. President Barack Obama's visit to Israel and Ramallah to meet Mahmoud
Abbas. And they aren't wrong, because since Obama moved to the White House, he
has demonstrated his allegiance to the Zionist state, which has been encouraged
to perpetuate and aggravate its oppression against them.
It is a rare Palestinianwho believes that the U.S. president,
re-elected for a second term, will choose another course on the
Israeli-Palestinian issue. If there are any, Obama will disabuse them. Indeed, before
arriving, he granted an interview to Israeli media in which he made it clear he
would stick to the unconditional support he has shown the Zionist state - even
if it has increased its settlement activity in the occupied territories and punitive
barbaric acts against the people there.
Even if it is Washington's stated goal,
reviving a “peace process” in clinical death is not the purpose of the U.S. president's
visit. Rather than as a leader of the world's greatest power, Obama arrives in
Israel “repentant,” having been publicly rebuffed and humiliated by the Israeli
prime minister during his first-term, and therefore, determined not to allow it
to happen again. In the aforementioned interview, Barack Obama made clear that
he wasn't coming to Israel to pressure its authorities on the issue of the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict, policies with which he approves, but to send the
message that America is on Israel's side and guarantees its security when it
comes to threats posed by the Syrian civil war and developments on the Iranian
nuclear issue.
With such topics on their agenda, Barack
Obama and Benyamin Netanyahu have provided proof that reviving the “peace
process” between Palestinians and Israelis is not their primary concern. They
talk of course, but by obscuring the subjects that really concern them, they ensure
that the peace process is blocked. It is on Palestinians that the U.S. president
will bring the pressure of his country to bear - in order to get them to give
up the strength drawn from their attitude. Palestinians therefore have no
reason to expect anything good from Obama's visit. It will in effect strengthen
the arrogance and brutality of the Zionist state - which will boast of an unwavering
Israeli-American strategic alliance.

The new Israeli cabinet formed by Binyamin
Netanyahu is backed by a party coalition whose members all oppose a two-state
solution as a way of settling the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Obama's visit will
win them time to persevere in their rejection of such a solution, knowing that
the U.S. president will not bring to bear the degree of pressure necessary to
oblige them to make concessions. And that is all the more true in the case of
the Palestinian issue. The recent Israeli legislative elections show that the
political class and Israeli public are almost unanimously in line with the uncompromising
stance of the Netanyahu cabinet not to accept the two-state solution.
In Ramallah, Obama will have soothing words
for the Palestinians. He will make improbable commitments that he will soon
forget. Hasn't he shown himself to be a specialist in this sort of exercise since
arriving at the White House?
