"The American missiles launched from American planes
fired against unarmed cities are the realized expression of Israeli cowardice
and the shamelessness of its supporters in Europe and the United States."
In the brutal imaginations of colonialists, the abuse
of power and crimes committed by their troops against unarmed populations are
"consequences of war" and, as such, are "battles" that bear
the names of the cities where they occur. One recalls the Battle of Algiers ,
in which the civilian population opposed hordes of paratroopers from an army of
torturers. The atrocities committed by another colonial army in Gaza, with the
blessing of the "civilized West," are now beginning to be called the
"Battle of Gaza." This appellation is the precise measure of a
capacity to distort reality into propaganda based on lies and disinformation.
To utilize battlefield weapons against a
city under siege for almost two years constitutes a war crime in true and
proper form. The American missiles launched from American planes fired against
an unarmed city are the realized expression of Israeli cowardice and the
shamelessness of its supporters in Europe and the United States.
But more shocking than the somewhat
natural attitude of those whose history is primarily a horrendous trail of
blood is the embarassed silence of "moderate" Arab regimes, which now
stand in the sorry glare of their own lack of honor. While Arab children are
killed, mosques are destroyed and hospitals are targeted, we are witnessing a
curious spectacle. One regime which sees itself as the guardian of Holy sites
[Saudi Arabia] and another that pretends to incarnate "Arabness"
[Egypt] are now twisted in the most pathetic contortions. Egyptian
procrastination regarding the opening of the Rafah crossing will stand in
history as a moment of cowardice that will be difficult to surpass. [Editor's

That "moderate" leaders don't
appreciate Hamas is something one can understand. But what remains inexcusable
is the turning of one's back on the suffering of a civilian population in a
neighboring country. In the shilly-shallying and cacophony of the latest
meeting of the Arab League, one voice truly embodied the spirit of resistance
and solidarity of all Arab peoples. Hassan Nasrallah has forcefully and clearly
expressed the unanimous opinion of Arabs and Muslims. His educational speech
has allowed us to assess the role of Arab regimes built upon a system of
capitulation. The parallels with the [Lebanon] war of July 2006 are indeed
striking. In disregard of the facts, those who accused Hezbullah of
"adventurism" are the same people who today accuse Hamas of having
broken the truce. In calling the Egyptian people to take to the streets,
Nasrallah has put real pressure on the Cairo regime, which has been forced to
protest, despite itself, for the minimal opening of the Rafah crossing to admit
humanitarian aid.
The Israelis aren't wrong in
proclaiming that their attack has only just begun. This is in fact just the
beginning. The real Battle of Gaza will take place sooner or later; it will pit
the armed forces of one against the other; and it will not be a face-to-face
confrontation between an over-armed Goliath and a starving David.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian
people are showing the whole world that they are standing up; and the
"moderate" Arab regimes are showing, once again, that they are
definitely lying down.
What is assumed to be a prisoner being held in Gaza's Saraya prison, during the first day of Israeli air assults on the Palestinian statelet. After three days, the attacks have claimed over 350 lives.
