Israeli Savagery a Stain on the West and a Stab at Obama

"The attack on the humanitarian flotilla was the consequence of a state decision to derail diplomatic efforts aimed at alleviating the predatory occupation of Gaza, the population of which has endured acts of genocide that inevitably bring to mind the horrific circumstances of the Jews who were herded and massacred by the Nazis in the Warsaw ghetto … the bullets that cut short the lives of more than a dozen pro-Palestinian activists were directed, ultimately, at the Middle East policies undertaken by Barack Obama."

After a commando raid on a flotilla of ships intent on breaking Israel's three-year blockade of Gaza, the Jewish State is confronting a firestorm of global criticism.

IBA ISRAEL NEWS VIDEO: Israeli news coverage of the global reaction to the commando raid on the civilian flotilla that was carrying aid for Gaza, June 1, 00:24:35RealVideo

The bloody attack executed the other night by the Israeli military against a flotilla of six ships that intended to bring humanitarian aid to the besieged population of Gaza - which left 19 activists dead and dozens wounded - is the consequence of the inacceptable margin of impunity that the United States and Western Europe have permitted the regime in Tel-Aviv to commit all sorts of war crimes, atrocities and violations of human rights. And not only against the Palestinians who are prisoners in their own land, but against any expression of solidarity with that unfortunate people. Israeli leaders know they can commit any crime, anywhere in the world, without bringing on themselves negative consequences of any kind.

Such were the circumstances under which the aggression occurred, in international waters on the Mediterranean Sea, against the Freedom Flotilla, with carried around 700 members of humanitarian organizations of various nationalities, mostly Turks, transporting about 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid (food, medicine and educational and construction materials) to the Gaza Strip, which has been suffering under a merciless blockade by Tel Aviv.

As usual, official Israeli propaganda has depicted the assaulted as aggressors and accused them of having "attacked, beaten and stabbed" the military forces who forcibly boarded the ships and fired indiscriminately at the people who were on them.

Such propagandistic falsifications clearly show that the attack on the humanitarian flotilla wasn't an isolated case of losing control, but the consequence of a state decision, the purpose of which can only be to derail diplomatic efforts aimed at alleviating - even minimally - the predatory occupation of the West Bank and the siege of Gaza, the population of which has been enduring acts of genocide that inevitably bring to mind the horrific circumstances of the Jews who were herded and massacred by the Nazis in the Warsaw ghetto.

From this perspective, the bullets that cut short the lives of more than a dozen pro-Palestinian activists have been directed, ultimately, at the Middle East policies undertaken by the administration of Barack Obama.

However, the worldwide indignation generated by the aggression against the Freedom Flotilla, which governments and social organizations have characterized as an act of state terrorism, will not be enough to put an end to the impunity with which the Israeli government has always operated. Demonstrations and expressions of outrage against the criminal actions of this regime seem only to have extended the threshold of tolerance permitting Tel-Aviv to continue its war crimes - even amidst universal condemnation.

This phenomenon makes it necessary to redirect and reformulate efforts of social solidarity with the Palestinians into specific demands directed at the governments of the United States and Western Europe. Diplomatic notes should be replaced by concrete political and economic sanctions, as well as legal actions aimed at bringing Israeli leaders before international tribunals of justice. At this point it is fitting to remind the reader of the double standards that characterize the conduct of wealthy Western nations, who razed Iraq and Serbia and brought their former leaders to trial for atrocities not unlike those that Israel has committed in occupied Palestine and in other parts of the world.

If Washington and the European Union allow to go unpunished, a criminal aggression perpetrated on international waters against civilian ships traveling to Gaza on a humanitarian mission, they will void all of their speeches and pronouncements in favor of the rule of international law, human rights and justice. And the world will advance not toward civilization - but savagery.
