Anger that Swept Obama in Turns Against Him
"After
a year, Obama's good intentions still seem intact - but like the old saying
goes, they're going to (political) hell in a hand basket."

A
victory in the Presidential election - a setback in the following congressional
elections: it's a democratic swing of the pendulum, as is the U.S. tradition.
The political reality makes even American heroes appear a bit smaller. But the defeat
in Massachusetts was not simply a shock - it was a slap in the face from some
of the same voters that put Obama in the White House.
The
political center in a deeply liberal state preferred to put its trust in a
right-leaning populist who sounds more like George Bush than the Democrat. And
that is above all a consequence of the policies in Washington.
Experts
and the media may like to analyze Obama's first yearly balance sheet and tease
out the big and small victories, but U.S. citizens saw no clear successes. What
they saw was staged bickering from Republicans around health care reform, until
in the end they didn't know what was in it for them.

They
saw billions pumped into banks in the midst of burgeoning unemployment. And
they saw a president who gives the most extraordinary speeches - and makes
quite ordinary policy. Obama has made every strategic error possible. He wanted
to be both a rebel and a conciliator. He has disappointed the left of his own
party and has given the Republicans the perfect bogeyman. He wanted to clean up
the financial sector and then put a cleaning crew of loud former bankers in the
spotlight. He took on the issue of a climate catastrophe, only to quickly drop when
the political winds seemed unfavorable. After a year, Obama's good intentions
still seem intact - but like the old saying goes, they're going to (political)
hell in a hand basket.
