Potentially Negligent Mass Murder: Climate Change Must Be Faced
"Do
we really want to play Russian roulette and put future generations at risk? … Apparently
yes. … This attitude, which can best be described as potentially negligent mass
murder, must be rectified immediately - yet there is scarcely any time left for
that now."

The latest snapshot of the
world’s climate is quite something: We're heating our planet to such a degree that
the rate of warming is accelerating. It's even possible that we'll have a seven
degree rise by 2100. If that happens, New York and Venice will only be
accessible to divers due to the rise in sea levels.
It's like a scene from a
horror film, but one that mustn't be allowed to occur. Yet the fact that it could,
and it's always more likely that things will develop along normal lines, should
be setting alarm bells ringing. Do we really want to play Russian roulette and put
future generations at risk? Do we really want to burden ourselves with such
guilt, only to be asked later: Why did you knowingly walk into this disaster?

Apparently yes, because
what characterizes the current political climate is a fatal mixture: short- and
medium-term economic interests that put profit above all else. Then there are
the politicians who are fond of uttering full-blooded soapbox oratory, but in
the crunch they turn meek and faint-hearted, capitulating when confronted with the
powerful captains of industry and approaching elections. And then above all like
a banner is the (old Viennese) motto: things won't get as bad as all that - based
on a few controversial studies.

The consequence is complete
gridlock. So it will be that the climate conference in Copenhagen fails to make
a breakthrough. And that is a true declaration of bankruptcy, because the world
has been preparing for this summit for four years. And worse still, it's an
imposition, particularly for future generations. This attitude, which can best be
described as potentially negligent mass murder, must be rectified immediately -
yet there is scarcely any time left for that now.
