Romney's Biggest Weakness Exposed on His Sojourn to Poland (Gazeta Wyborcza,
Poland)
"Commentators
who wrote that the visit of right-wing U.S. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney
remains in the shadow of the Cold War – and that he is doing everything
possible to differentiate himself from Barack Obama, whose gaze is more
directed at the future, were right. And this is Romney’s biggest weakness."

Kazimierz Pulaski: Mentioned by Mitt Romney during a speech in Poland, Pulaski was a nobleman known to history as 'father of the American cavalry.' Pulaski fled to America after taking part in an uprising against Russian domination of his native land, which was then a Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth. He is reputed to have saved the life of no less than George Washington, before being elevated to general in the Continental Army.

Poland and America
share a common mission: the defense of freedom and bringing it to the world - and
that includes economic freedom. And while Poland and America are both in love
with this notion of freedom - Poland has paid dearly for it. In these times of crisis,
Poland, with an economy that is coping well, sound public finances and a
culture of entrepreneurship, is a model for Europe. That was the Mitt Romney's message
in Warsaw.
There was no great
speech about foreign policy. Neither was there a vision for the superpower's
relations with Europe, should Romney find himself sitting in the White House
after the November election. Those who hoped that the Republican Party
candidate would criticize Russia for its authoritarian inclinations were
disappointed, as were those wanting to know how he imagines a future missile
defense system, elements of which will soon be based in Poland.

Admittedly, in touching
on the enemies of liberty and those who stifle democratic freedoms, Romney spoke
of the problems of Belarus under it dictatorial ruler, although he never mentioned
the culprit by name: Alexander Lukashenko. However,
the name of Venezuela President Hugo Chavez was spoken, just after his
condemnation of the Syrian regime.
Romney's speeches
were a colorful tapestry, woven from the threads of the history of freedom and
its gallant squires - the Poles. The former Massachusetts governor recalled the
merits of American Revolutionary War hero Kazimierz
Pułaski, the greatness of the Constitution of
May 3, 1791, and the courage of an electrician from Gdansk (at whose
invitation Romney visited Poland). Pope John Paul II’s famous rallying cry, “Do
not be afraid,” which helped topple communism, was also spoken. There was
praise not only for the Polish soldiers of the Second World War, but for those
who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Mr. Romney also assured us that we can
count on America: “Poland has no greater friend and ally than the people of the
United States. You helped us win our independence, your bravery inspired the
allies in the Second World War, and you helped bring down the Iron Curtain,” he
said.
