Political Correctness Hobbles America's WASP Ruling Class

"Little by little, American WASPs are losing their elite status. … With the retirement of John Paul Stevens there will be no Protestants left on the Supreme Court. Despite representing almost 60 percent of the American population, the once dominant Protestants will soon be gone from the third branch. The other members are Catholic (5) and Jewish (2)."

Little by little, American WASPs are losing their elite status. For those unfamiliar with this acronym, it means White, Ango-Saxon and Protestant [Americans of British-American descent]. In the past, they were the richest, the academics, the politicians, the athletes, the justices of the Supreme Court and essentially the entire American upper class. Jews and other immigrants prospered economically throughout the first decades of the 20th century. Their children sat in the classes of Ivy League universities like Harvard and Yale. Blacks and Hispanics have become stand-outs in sports. But in politics and the law, White Protestants continued to dominate, except for rare cases like as that of Jewish Justice Benjamin Cardozo.

Until the last presidential election, candidates had always been White and male. The only non-Protestant president was John Kennedy, who was a Catholic. Obviously, the first Black man is Barack Obama. New York has already elected Jewish and Black mayors, as has Washington D.C. California has an Austrian governor. But that still isn't enough to allow us to say that WASPs don't dominate politics. But what if we look at the Supreme Court? With the retirement of John Paul Stevens, which was announced last week, there will be no Protestants left on the Supreme Court. Despite representing almost 60 percent of the American population, the once dominant Protestants will be gone from the third branch [the judiciary]. The other members are Catholic (5) and Jewish (2). Of course, that is, if a Protestant isn't named this time.

The U.S. isn't the only country to see a ruling elite lose ground. Based on the Lebanese Constitution, Lebanese Maronite Christians still hold the post of president. But, divided since the civil war, today they hold less political power than Sunnis and Shiites. The Afrikaners (Whites of Dutch origin) of South Africa who controlled the country during Apartheid, today see political power in the hands of Blacks and economic power in the hands of Whites of British origin.

Among Americans, the change occurred within the civil rights movement, which has always sought equality among races and religions in the U.S. - and today this is a reality. Being Jewish or Muslim impedes no one from obtaining a job in the U.S. I agree, it would be complicated for Americans to vote for a Muslim as president, but Muslims do have per capita incomes higher than the average American. Blacks have already had a president and two secretaries of state - both within the conservative government of George W. Bush. The last three presidents named women to lead their diplomacy. It's only a matter of time before one becomes president.

At the same time, protecting minorities ends up hurting those who are born male, White and Protestant. The majority of these WASPs aren't born to a wealthy family from the Upper East Side of New York, didn't study in a private school in Connecticut or graduate from Princeton. They are ordinary people, unemployed in Detroit or Chicago, who end up suffering because they don't belong to a minority. They don't hold special places in universities nor are they on lists of politically-correct nominations. There were so many, that in recent years they forgot to put Protestants on the Supreme Court.

THE OTHER SIDE - The majority of the American Congress is still White and Protestant. Blacks still suffer discrimination in the United States. Muslims complain of the treatment they receive from the media. Jews fear the strengthening of neo-Nazi groups. The percentage of Blacks in prison is much higher than for Whites. Obama may be Black, but his mother was White and his dad came from Africa. He had no part of the great movements of Blacks in Harlem or the south. So the presence of women, Blacks, Jews and Catholics on the Supreme Court could be seen as progress, and not as the decline of the WASPs. Sometimes being politically correct helps.
