'As a Human Being, I Support Obama'

"I write these words as a human being, as an inhabitant of the Earth, as a son of God, as a lover of universal values that must prevail among those who inhabit the five continents: Barack Obama must be the next President of the United States. In the event that he doesn't win, many will be sad and perhaps shed tears, because humanity as a whole will have lost. Barack Obama is a light that inspires hope that we can have a better world."

Dominican Republic - El Caribe - Original Article (Spanish)

A supporter of Barack Obama during a campaign rally in Sunrise, Florida, Oct. 29. As great as the support for Obama is in the United States, global support is even stronger. And according to a recent poll of Latin American countries, knowledge of the U.S. election is greater in the Dominican Republic than any other nation in the region.

I'm not writing this article as a Dominican or a Latino, which I am by chance, although I feel proud of my roots. Naturally, I don't write this as a United Statesien [someone of the United States], which I am not.

I write these words as a human being, as an inhabitant of the Earth, as a son of God, as a lover of universal values that must prevail among those who inhabit the five continents.

I may be biased, I don’t deny it. But I say from my heart with rock-solid conviction, thinking of the future of the world beyond the end of my nose and my circle of friends: Barack Obama must be the next President of the United States.

From afar, we must pray or transmit whatever energy we can to make this happen.

It would be a round of applause for peace - we are so tired of useless wars based on deception.

But at the same time, Obama will be a president who will energetically confront terrorism - that atrocious kind of terrorism that, in the name of ideology or religion, murders without compassion.

It would be a welcome development for people to see someone ascend based on their strength, study and sacrifice, which is what Obama has done. He is an extraordinary symbol of overcoming, which will serve as a worthy example for generations to come.

It would also elicit a round of applause for the United States, whose moral leadership couldn't be lower thanks to the disastrous matter of human rights and violations of international law, which is the fault of the government headed by George Bush. With Obama, that great country will surely more than recover its prestige and respect within the community of nations.

And it would bring a round of applause for the recovery of the North American economy, the collapse of which is spreading without impediment to all of our nations, where the poorest people - including Americans - are the most affected. The catastrophe over there drags us all down.

In the event that Obama doesn't win, many will be sad and perhaps shed tears, because humanity as a whole will have lost, as all of us will, in terms of our own small parts of it.

The disenchantment, believe me, will be wide spread, and if the globe had a flag, it would be flying at half-mast.

Barack Obama is a light that inspires hope that we can have a better world, or at least that we'll try for one without the specter of the hawks, without the rule of intolerance, without the gibberish of mediocrity and without the leadership of people with messianic conceits who are only predestined to inflict harm.
