Consolation prize?: Vice President Joe Biden and Polish Prime Minister

Donald Tusk in Warsaw, Oct. 21. It seems that U.S. forces are headed

to Poland to reassure Polish leaders after the cancellation of plans to

build elements of an anti-missile shield in East Europe.

'Live American Shields' are Better than Bush's Missile Defense System

"An agreement will be signed on stationing U.S. Army troops in Poland … it pays to have the Americans on our soil. Let the potential aggressor know that an attack on Poland would incur the wrath of the most powerful nation in the world."

Poland - Dziennik - Original Article (Polish)

It seems that even before Vice President Biden’s visit [Oct. 20], an agreement will be signed on stationing U.S. Army troops in Poland. The document will open the way for the construction of an American base here. Even if small, it will improve our security. An attack on the Polish Republic will automatically engage the U.S., which means poor prospects for the aggressor.

Bush’s anti-missile shield wouldn't have protected Polish territory. The only benefit of the investment for us would have been in attracting American interest and automatically engaging them in the event of aggression against Poland. Just like this agreement does, except that Obama’s shield could theoretically also defend our skies.

As a member of NATO, Poland is protected by Article 5 of the Washington Treaty. It obliges all members of the Alliance to offer immediate assistance when any member is attacked. But NATO plans in case of a Polish war with Russia are inadequate. It's unclear who would help us, when, or with what forces. Not only than, but NATO countries are ever-more frequently questioning the validity of Article 5. With my own ears I've heard leading Dutch government experts answer “no” to the question of whether Holland would help Poland in case of war.

NATO is no longer on a hair trigger. Rather, it is a well-oiled rifle in a box that is nailed shut. Who knows whether it will go off at all? So it pays to have the Americans on our soil. Let the potential aggressor know that an attack on Poland would incur the wrath of the most powerful nation in the world.
