America's Truly 'Planetary Election'

"The global financial crisis has served to mask the historic magnitude of November 4th. On that day, the American presidential election will be held - but not just for the citizens of the United States. It will concern all continents, all peoples, all cultures, all races; it will be, in a way, a planetary election."

The global financial crisis has served to mask the historic magnitude of November 4th. On that day, the American presidential election will be held - but not just for the citizens of the United States. It will concern all continents, all peoples, all cultures, all races; it will be, in a way, a planetary election.

Of course, there's the Obama phenomenon. And even if the Senator is from Illinois is far from the victory promised to him at the polls, his status as the favorite is in itself an extraordinary sign. A Black [man] at the doors of the White House! The world's leading nation ready to entrust itself to a president from its minority population! Who would have bet a dollar on such a scenario only twelve months ago?

Such an occurrence goes beyond the usual electoral twists and turns that occur every so often in the political history of the United States. It goes far beyond the exceptional brilliance of the candidate and his masterful campaign management. Obama is beyond all calculation, strategizing and even given a possibility of victory for John McCain.

Long before the epilogue of its long presidential race, America was determined to turn the page on burned-out Bushism. From the depths of Nebraska, Utah or Montana, people weren't necessarily conscious of it, but intuitively, they probably knew: America is about to experience a fundamental change in its civilization. They know it: the president they are about to elect will confront an unknown world in which the end of oil is approaching, the challenges of climate change loom and the storm of an insane capitalism is shuffling all the cards.

ELECTION FUN: RON HOWARD GOES ALL OT FOR OBAMA

Is it a coincidence that this democracy, far more exacting than one can imagine, hesitated alternately between a determined woman, a not-so conformist Republican and Democrat so out of the norm? For eight years, George W. Bush made us forget that America retains its formidable capacity to surprise us …
