Vulnerability of U.S. Comic Heroes Holds Lesson for Business

"Disney acquired Marvel. What's Disney? Animated drawings. What's Marvel? Drawn characters. … From Disney and Marvel to Warner and DC Comics, there is a pattern: those who keep moving, buy; those who stand still, are purchased. That is just as true in cartoons as it is in real life."

Is comic book Superman mere chattel compared to his animated counterpart, the Road Runner?

COMICBOOK CLUB, U.S.: Have you given up on comic books?, Aug 28, 00:09:50RealVideo

Disney acquired Marvel. What's Disney? Animated drawings. What's Marvel? Drawn characters. Then there is Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse - these characters were born projected onto a screen and speaking with voices that could be heard, with background music, running, motion, in short, they were cartoon characters - and they are the ones who did the buying.

Then there is Captain Marvel and Spider-Man, powerful but confined to paper, with muscles but silent, moving through the air but static, without audible voices but with letters in a balloon; in other words, comic book heroes - and it was they who were purchased. There is, moreover, a precedent to this: Warner acquired DC Comics. Warner, which has the "beep-beep" Road Runner who we saw and heard escape the coyote's traps [Wile E. Coyote], Warner with the dancing legs of Bugs Bunny, Warner of animated drawings - it is Warner that did the buying.

And then there is the DC Comics of Clark Kent, who, goes into a telephone booth with glasses in one drawing and comes out in an entirely different drawing as Superman - it was DC Comics - a collection of drawn characters - which was acquired.

From Disney and Marvel to Warner and DC Comics, there is a pattern: those who keep moving, buy; those who stand still, are purchased. That is just as true in cartoons as it is in real life.
