Jewish Lobby Ties Obama's
Hands on Palestinian Statehood
"Obama
wouldn't dare bear the burden of deciding to recognize a Palestinian state on
Palestinian territory that the Zionist movement and its founders have preached
was their Promised Land for over 120 years. ... One cannot believe anything
other than that Obama must take this into consideration."
Hungarian writer and journalist Theodore Herzl: Frustrated by the treatment of Jews in Europe, Hertl wrote a book in 1896 arguing for the creation of a modern Jewish state, launching the Zionist movement that resulted in the founding of the state of Israel.
What are the reasons for
Obama’s insistence on the veto, despite the wish he expressed last year to see a
Palestinian state seated at the United Nations? Is it just an American domestic
calculation based on elections and such? Or could it be related to calculations
of foreign policy?
It would be really quite impossible
for any U.S. administration to reconsider America's strategic interests with Israel
- unless the benefits of better relations with the Arabs outweighed the risks.
As a whole, the American government would consider such an eventuality a gamble
in terms of security and economics. U.S. policy is based on a calculation of
profit and loss. As long as America can maintain the status quo while hanging
on to its ongoing interests with Arab countries, it will continue to favor the
Israeli government - even if that entails ten times more political headaches
than today.
Until it feels assured about
the movement on the Arab street, the U.S. government cannot advocate full U.N.
membership for a Palestinian state. If it agrees not to use its veto, it would
be a political victory for the Palestinian Revolution that could stir the Arab street
into another chapter of what has come to be called the "Arab Spring."
This could result in a loss of control over the Arab masses on the part of
American and European governments. Indeed, it seems that that the generous moral
and material support America and Europe have devoted to countries that have
recently seen revolution, like Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, was offered to tempt Arab
movements into the American and European orbit.

Therefore, until it can see a
secure future beyond the "Arab Spring," the U.S. administration will
not gladly promote a spirit of political understanding that has until now been
unheard of. The American government knows full well that the Palestinian issue
has always been a positive and hot-button sentiment encouraging change in Arab lands,
and that a political victory for the Palestinian Revolution will most
definitely mean a transformation of the “Arab Spring.” This would be contrary
to the expectations of the Americans, who now find cruising unmolested through
Arab lands much harder than before the revolutions.
The American administration
will exercise its veto because the Jewish lobby, in league with the Netanyahu
government, is dissatisfied with Palestinian economic growth and its recognition
by the World Bank. While an economically developing and independent Palestinian
state would be a victory for Palestinians in their battle for liberation and
independence, it would be a great loss for Israel's economy. The Israeli
government wants to keep the situation as it is, which results in huge profits
exporting to Palestinians. From the point of view of the Israeli lobby in
Washington, going from "governing authority" to a fully-fledged
"state" would mean a multi-faceted Palestinian economy and a victory
in our battle for independence.
Like Germany, the American
government cannot neglect its promise to ensure Israel’s security and
existence. It has its obligations. Obama wouldn't dare bear the burden of
deciding to recognize a Palestinian state on Palestinian territory that the Zionist
movement and its founders have preached was their Promised Land for over 120
years. This topic is not only politically complicated, but culturally so as
well. One cannot believe anything other than that Obama must take this into
consideration.
[Editor's Note: While the word "Zionism" has taken on a sinister meaning to many in the Muslim world, Zionism is a concept conceived of by French Jewish journalist Theodore Herzl in his 1896 book The State of the Jews. In light of Europe's history of cruelty and marginalization of Jews and after a French Jewish military officer named Alfred Dreyfus was accused of spying for Germany and convicted of treason in one of the most notorious cases of anti-Semitism in French history, Herzl concluded that Jews would never be accepted in Europe and needed their own homeland. This is the origin of Zionism and the drive to create a Jewish state in Israel.]
But most of the countries in
Europe - where the Jewish problem emerged - have come forward to support the U.S.
position at the U.N. General Assembly, which provides Obama or any future U.S.
leader with an opportunity to liberate themselves from the conundrum of the
Jewish lobby. Was it Obama’s intention to see Palestine as no more than an
observing member of the United Nations?! Perhaps in the coming days or the
months and years ahead, Obama will show us the answer. But whatever it is, there
is only one meaning for a freedom no longer subject to American and Israeli
intentions, regardless of the alphabet they use.
