For Once, America Must
Bring Israel to its Senses
"Can
the U.S. continue to bear the weight of the Israeli government's preposterous
and inhumane policies? No it cannot. … America has to pull itself together,
just as the European Union must. It's time to say 'Stop' to Israeli governments."
After a commando raid on a flotilla of ships intent on breaking Israel's three-year blockade of Gaza, the Jewish State is confronting a firestorm of global criticism.
Israel's attack on a flotilla
carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza in international waters and its unblinking murder
of civilians has left the world in shock. Yet Israel's history is filled with
hundreds of examples of such barbarity.
In three weeks between Dec.
27, 2008 and Jan. 18, 2009, Israel killed 1,284 Palestinians in Gaza. Of this
figure, 894 were civilians; and among the civilians, 280 were small children
and teens under the age of 17. Everyone knows that Israel gets its courage from
the U.S. and Europe, has never faced the consequences of its actions and cannot
be stopped by anyone. And on top of all this, it possesses nuclear weapons.
It's impossible to truly
grasp what's happening today without a thorough understanding of Israeli-U.S.
relations. Allow me to recall the incident involving the USS Liberty,
which YıldırayOğur
mentioned in his article published in the Taraf
Daily the other day.
During the Arab-Israeli war
on June 8, 1967, the intelligence ship USS Liberty was attacked by
Israeli jets and torpedo boats while sailing in international waters with a crew
of 294 aboard. The attack killed 34 and wounded 171.
First, at 2:00pm, two French-made
Mirage fighters began
attacking the ship. A few minutes later, without warning, three Super-Mystere fighter bombers launched dozens of rockets and
napalm bombs at the ship. Shortly afterward, the ship was again attacked by
Mirage jets.
Liberty's distress call was first received by the aircraft
carrier USS Saratoga,
which was just 400 miles away. Twelve F-14 Phantom jets and four tanker
aircraft were told to deploy to defend the Liberty. But the help never arrived
because then-Defense Secretary Robert McNamara got on
the radio personally and said, “Tell the Sixth Fleet to get those aircraft back
immediately.”

Sixth Fleet Rear Admiral Lawrence
Geis demanded confirmation of the recall order, which
he couldn't make sense of. The order was confirmed by President Johnson. The Rear
Admiral Geis was told that it didn't matter who was
killed or what happened to the ship because the president didn't want to cause distress
to their ally (Israel). The jets had to return and that was that.
The fighter jet attack was
followed by torpedo boats attacks - and one of the torpedoes killed 25 people.
They surrounded the ship and continued shooting at the injured on the deck - and
at fire extinguishers - for 40 minutes. When the Liberty was later
pulled to Malta, 821 rocket holes and 3,000 armor-piercing bullet holes were
found.
For many years, the surviving
personnel of the USS Liberty asked members of Congress to investigate
the attack. Not only have U.S. officials done nothing for 43 years on the
matter, but they've refused to listen to any information about how the incident
happened. It was a war crime - and failing to investigate a war crime is itself
a crime.
The crucial point here is the
failure of the United States to shed any light on this incident, which sparks renewed
outcries when Americans are killed anywhere in the world. The Liberty
attack is the only incident in American naval history that hasn't been
investigated by the U.S. Congress. The event is one of the most tightly kept
secrets of America's secret services. (For more information you can go to www.ussliberty.org or www.haysiyet.com).

The Liberty incident
illustrates the magnitude of the continuing influence of the Jewish hawks over
the U.S. government and politicians. But can the U.S. continue to bear the
weight of the Israeli government's preposterous and inhumane policies? No it
cannot. In Israel, there may be rapacious and barbaric politicians who care
little for the future of the Israeli people, but the whole of humanity cannot
stand idly by and watch such vile recklessness and rapaciousness.
America has to pull itself
together, just as the European Union must.
It's time to say "Stop"
to Israeli governments. How much longer will a country of 5 million be
permitted to pose such a threat to world peace? The alliance of civilizations necessary
for global peace will hang in the balance as long as Israel's atrocious policies
and state terror continue. It's time to bring Israel to its senses.
