Having been detained for 267
days (as of Sept. 24), Chen Shui-bian has made his next move. Calling himself
the “former president of the Republic of China government in exile,” he has decided
to sue U.S. President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, charging
that the United States has a duty to resume jurisdiction over Taiwan. And if it
did, Chen says that he would be willing to go to the United States and testify
[as to the legality of U.S. jurisdiction]. Netizens, however, have mocked Chen,
suggesting that perhaps he should write to aliens asking them to save the planet.
[Editor's
Note: Chen claims in his affidavit that Taiwanese territory remains under U.S. military
occupation, which he says Obama and Gates have failed to enforce. Ceded to
Japan under the Treaty
of Shimonoseki in 1895, Formosa (the old name for Taiwan) and the Pescadores
were reoccupied by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's
troops under a special order issued in 1945 by General Douglas
MacArthur, who was the supreme commander of Allied Forces in the Pacific. Chen
alleges that Chiang ruled Taiwan on behalf of the United States].
U.S. State
Department officials said that as far as Chen’s petition to Obama, they had no
response. The news has, however, generated a lot of discussion on the Internet.
Some people suggest that Chen should simply write to NASA, or that he's carrying
a confidential letter in his pocket asking E.T. to call home for aliens to save
the Earth. Still others wonder whether Chen, having been locked up so long, is beginning
to lose his mind. He's really got his head in the clouds to the point that he can't breath. Since he says Taiwan is an exiled government, then why would he be that exiled government's "president" for eight years and steal eight year's of that government's money?

Regarding Chen’s lawsuit against
Obama and others, Democratic
Progressive Party spokesman Cheng Wen-tsang said that the DPP was quite
surprised and didn’t understand what Chen was thinking. He said that the DPP’s
stance and Chen’s appeal for the U.S. to "occupy Taiwan” weren’t
synonymous.
