Evil personified: A world
wonders how and why in one of the world's
leading nations, someone
can commit the crimes of an Ariel Castro?
Crimes of Ariel Castro: A Sign of America's 'Dysfunctional
Society' (Die Suedostschweiz, Switzerland)
The
events in the Cleveland house of horrors defy all imagination. The fact that
Ariel Castro was able to hold three adult women captive for over a decade and
that this went unnoticed demands an explanation.
Someone had to have noticed
something. Be it the screams of the abused women, the cries of a baby, the
overabundance of groceries for a single person, or a helpless victim's attempt
to make contact with the outside world.
The
really shocking thing about this crime is how seamlessly it was integrated into
the daily routine of a busy neighborhood. Unnoticed and unobserved. A symptom
of a society that has proven itself to be dysfunctional at best. How else can
we explain the fact that no one wondered why Ariel covered his windows to views
from the outside? Or that he never allowed anyone to enter the house - neither
his relatives, nor members of the Salsa band he made music with?

It
also seems inconceivable that the police really didn’t respond to any reports.Residents of poorer U.S. neighborhoods
complain again and again about the inadequate police presence, long response
times, and simple ignorance. This makes the moral courage of Charles Ramsey,
the Black dishwasher who freed the three women, even more exceptional. When he
heard Amanda Berry’s cries for help, he rushed over and kicked the door down.
The hero of Cleveland saw something and took action. The shining exception in a
terribly grim tragedy. What might the three women have been spared, if someone
had discovered their inner “Ramsey” sooner?
