"Gingrich, who wanted to bring down Bill Clinton because of his affair with an intern while he himself was cheating on his wife, is one political animal who in a matter of minutes can change his opinion 180 degrees if it suits him - and he will let go the full force of his wrath on anyone who points this out."
At the moment, we in Europe
are busy gazing at our navels, what with the euro and all the pleasures
associated with that. But let us not forget that in the United States, the
decision on who will run against Barack Obama is currently being reached.
Here, the Republicans are
embarrassingly reminiscent of the Swiss People's Party [SVP] … although when
it comes to the nomination of viable candidates for high office, the SVP actually
looks amazing in comparison. The only advantage Republicans have over the SVP
is probably that the candidates activate the self-destruct button several
months- not just days - before the polls.
But their choice of
candidates is staggering. The madcap Republican stable includes characters like
arch-conservative, homophobic, social-Darwinist, hate-politician Rick Santorum;
pizza-adulterer Herman Cain, who unsurprisingly stumbled - not because of his
moronic tax plan or his total ignorance of foreign policy, but because of his
serial infidelity - and even as he continued to proclaim his religious faith; Michelle
Bachmann the intellectual vacuum, who will likely be used by anti-feminists for
years to come as a pretext for keeping women out of politics … although, after the
appearances of Rick Perry, during which he wasn’t even able to remember his own
campaign program, men should no longer be allowed to aspire to political office
either.
Ron Paul, an old guard
libertarian and isolationist with the charisma of oatmeal, has been constantly sidelined
throughout, while Mitt Romney, consistently the favorite, comes across as being
as lively and vivacious as a petrified codfish. In addition, he sometimes gives
the impression of being out of touch - for instance, when he challenged Rick
Perry’s position on health care with a $10,000 bet. It was a suggestion that
provoked a storm of contempt - to put it mildly- over how out of touch he really
is.
John Huntsman by contrast,
one of those aspirants obviously in command of an IQ of more than two digits,
isn’t crass enough for the Republican circus. Which leaves the U.S. with an
Obama challenger who is very intelligent, but whose perpetual overconfidence,
lack of scruples - and yes, megalomania - has for three decades has provided
entertainment and ensured head-shaking: Newt Gingrich.
Gingrich, who wanted to bring
down Bill Clinton because of his affair with an intern while he himself was
cheating on his wife, is one political animal who in a matter of
minutes can change his opinion 180 degrees if it suits him - and
he will let go the full force of his wrath on anyone who points this out. But
it takes far less than that to trigger Gingrich: His enormous anger at Bill
Clinton was apparently sparked when on a flight home from a state visit, he was
made to sit in the back of the plane rather than with the president up front as
he wished, which ultimately led to a budget crisis and a government shutdown.
Gingrich also likes to
portray himself as a beacon of morality. Too bad this beacon is apparently
fueled by old car tires. The self-proclaimed Christian presented his former
wife a list of conditions for divorce to sign while she was in the hospital recovering
from cancer surgery. This, so that he could marry the woman with whom he had
betrayed his ailing and estranged wife as quickly as possible.
Let anyone who thinks this is
a private matter be reminded of the $300,000 fine the House of Representatives
slapped on Gingrich for ethical lapses as House Speaker - an action that had
never before and never since been taken in the history of the House of
Representatives. Or of the involvement of one of his “think tanks” with the
healthcare industry.
At one point last spring when
nearly his entire campaign staff threw in the towel, leaving the organization
because of Gingrich's megalomaniacal behavior, his campaign already looked near
death. That fact that he leads in the polls shows above all how unbelievably
poor the selection of Republican candidates is.
That Gingrich - after all of his
affairs, lies and two divorces (that's right, the woman he left his first wife for has
now also been disposed of) has a chance with conservative Christian Republican
core voters, has to do with the fact that he, “asked
for and received God’s forgiveness and is now a completely different
person.” Yeah right.

It will be very interesting
to see if Romney - now that he's trailing in the polls - continues to play fair
rather than launching a smear campaign against Gingrich. And for such a
campaign he would certainly fall back on moments that would only be considered
“dirt” by Republicans, such as when Gingrich took positions on climate change
and healthcare that might easily have come from Obama.
And even if Gingrich is
selected as candidate … his greatest enemy in the battle against the sitting
president will not be the latter. It would be, as Newt Gingrich has already
repeatedly proven: Newt Gingrich.
P.S. If you're wondering
which “newt” the title refers to, then please translate Gingrich’s first name
into German [newt = pig].
