Norwegian
mass murderer Anders Breivik leaves his first court
hearing, July
25. Do U.S. neocons bear responsibility for his crimes?

The Troubling Profile of a 'Bushian Terrorist'
"This
terrorist took care to hammer home his pro-Israel and anti-Muslim political
commitment. … Anders Behring Breivik is truly the fruit of the supremacist and
racist speech of George W. Bush and his epigones in Tel-Aviv and Europe. … Indeed,
this criminal fits perfectly into a clearly identified political continuum."
The most thankless job in the legal world: Geir Lippestad, lawyer of Anders Behring Breivik, prepares to read a statement by his client and meet the press in Osla, July 26.
The
profile of the criminal who plunged Norway into mourning really troubles the conformist
press. On an initial impulse, Western media naturally preferred the jihadist route,
the exclusive channel of terrorism since September 11, 2001. Since the
publication of the mass murderer's photo along with details from the Oslo
police about the character of this "native-born" Norwegian, there has
been some palpable discomfort.
Even
so, material abounds on a character who has posted a text of over a thousand
pages on the Web. Certainly an Islamophobe and a fundamentalist Christian, too;
but also, as he has said several times, a militant shock Zionist. And it is
really at these levels that the portrait of Anders Behring Breivik poses a problem
for the anti-Arab columnists who are legion among the media commissariat of Western
thought.
In
every way, this Bushian terrorist blurs the Manichean representation that the spokespeople of civilization
are struggling to impose on the collective unconscious. And so it is a curious
exercise of semantic contortions, gaping omissions and biased misrepresentation
that officials have abandoned themselves to in the state-approved ideology. Some didn't
hesitate to accuse the Islamists of having provoked this
"counter-terror" with their attacks and inflammatory rhetoric.
This is to disregard the extreme right-wing terrorism that has existed on both
sides of the Atlantic for decades - well before the emergence of bin Laden and
his followers.
Even
the label terrorist, applied liberally whenever a crime is committed by a
dark-skinned person, is being used with some reserve. And so Breivik is a sort
of madman, "unbalanced," a "psychopath," and his actions,
devoid of political meaning, is nothing but an individual explosion of violence
indicative of pure insanity.
The
"great" pseudo-experts on Islam and terrorism have thus been exempt
from duty on television. And since there no experts on "White"
terrorism, public opinion will have to content itself with a broad spectrum of
teary lamentation.
Nevertheless,
this terrorist took care to hammer home his pro-Israel and anti-Muslim
political commitment, ensuring, by acting it out, that this nauseating
operational and ideological synthesis is constantly broadcast by the various
constituents of neoconservative propaganda. Breivik is truly the fruit of the
supremacist and racist speech of George W. Bush and his epigones in Tel-Aviv
and Europe.
And
it is this direct relationship between state terrorism, built on a representation
of the world defined by the so-called war of civilizations, and the actions of this
militant fanatic, that the sanctioned press is trying to cover up. It's not a question of
absolving any terrorism whatsoever or of lapsing into the essentialism so characteristic of neoconservatives. It is
neither a Christian nor specifically Scandinavian. Indeed, this criminal fits perfectly
into a clearly identified political continuum.

The
warlike speech directed toward the Arab-Muslim world, which is portrayed as a
menacing whole, makes up the ideological bath that contributes to the
justification of fanaticism in the West. There is no cultural determinism that
predisposes one to extremism; it is the result of a political context in which
democracy is undermined by speech and exclusionary practices. This is a
universal assessment that resists all cultural categorization and which applies
equally to terrorists from the south and those of the cold north.
