President Obama: Health care damage
control belies other failures.
Obama's Hope-Killing 'Virtual Political Death' (La Jornada, Mexico)
"Theannouncement PresidentObama madeyesterdayputs himinto a state of virtual political
death. His position seems reduced to playing a merely administrative
or management role representing the interests that really pull the strings of power
in his country. ... For the liberals and progressives that took Obama to the
White House in 2008 and citizens around the whole world who placed their hopes for
change in the current president, his administration is a hope killer, to the
extent that it renders the country incapable of resolving the vices, miseries
and distortions it suffers economically, politically, diplomatically and socially."
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius: If heads roll - hers will likely be first, after the most inexplicable Web-based foul-up of the Internet age.
Subjected
to strong pressure from Republican legislators and growing faction of
Democrats, President Barack Obama announced modifications yesterday to the
application of his health reform for the country - popularly known as Obamacare - which would ensure that policyholders that wish
to keep their current medical plans that don't meet the legal requirements
approved by the U.S. Congress in 2010 can do so through 2014. It is a concession
that is a setback to the spine of the Obama health plan, which is designed so
that all U.S. residents have minimal health coverage.
Although
the president himself said that these modifications are of a temporary character
and designed to restore his health plan, the episode is equivalent to the
collapse of the main and almost only political victory obtained by his
administration. In addition to the aforementioned rejection that this reform
has elicited from opposition legislators and a segment of his own party, the
U.S. chief executive faces the growing distrust of U.S. citizens because of the
difficulties inherent in this legal amendment.

Thus,
Obama is heading into the last three years of his term without the only element
of change driven by his administration, the defense of which has resulted in a prolonged
political wearing down of his government - as demonstrated by the recent halt
of all government activity due to the opposition's refusal to endorse
a 2013-2014 budget package unless the government backed off on implementing Obamacare. This brought to mind
numerous concessions to the opposition: in its almost five years in office, the
Obama presidency has moderated almost every progressive aspect of his agenda
for social transformation; he has continued Washington's warmongering and
diplomatic immorality in the world; he has avoided the proper regulation of the
U.S. financial and fiscal system; and he has even renounced aspects of his
agenda that generated the most consensus, such as the closing of Guantánamo.
Theannouncement PresidentObama madeyesterdayputs himinto
a state of virtual political death: an administration
devoid of social substance, shown to be unable to counterbalance the formal and
informal powers that oppose the social and political transformation of the United
States, the president doesn't seem to have the strength or the will to drive the
rest of his original proposalsover the next three years - such as comprehensive
immigration reform. His position seems reduced to playing a merely administrative
or management role representing the interests that really pull the strings of power
in his country.
An
example of the corporate interests he is administering are negotiations for the
Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement that the U.S. is holding with a dozen governments
in the context of complete secrecy.
For
the liberals and progressives that took Obama to the White House in 2008 and citizens
around the whole world who placed their hopes for change in the current
president, his administration is a hope killer, to the extent that it renders
the country incapable of resolving the vices, miseries and distortions it
suffers economically, politically, diplomatically and socially.
