'Man-Killer' MacArthur is No Hero!

To mark the 58th anniversary of the Korean War, the North Korean regime's strictly-controlled media has published this 'commentary' lashing out the publication of a new book being distributed to South Korean students praising the United States and General Douglas MacArthur for saving their nation from communist domination.

Quoting from the Rodong Sinmun, which could be regarded as Kim Jong-il's family newspaper, the commentary says in part:

"This is part of the sinister plot by pro-U.S. conservative forces to quell the spirit of independence and resistance to the United States, which is growing ever-stronger among adults and young people in south Korea.'

Douglas MacArthur: On October 1, 1950, in what is widely considered his crowning achievement, he completely changed the course of the war by ordering - over nearly unanimous objections - an amphibious invasion at the port of Inchon, near Seoul.

Pyongyang: In Seoul, the "Reservists' Association," an ultra-right-wing group in south Korea, recently published and distributed copies of an anti-communist comic book called Proper Understanding of June 25 War [actually, the book is called Spreading Correct Knowledge of the Korean War] not only to primary, middle and high school students but to kindergarteners as well, stirring up great public furor.

Commenting on this on Tuesday, the Rodong Sinmun calls the comic book "extremely reactionary," given that it describes man-killer MacArthur as a "benefactor" and "hero," although he inflicted immeasurable misfortune and disaster upon the Korean nation. It also claimed that any call for a withdrawal of U.S. forces from the south Korea would be the same as being "taken in by the north's strategy."

What is even more intolerable is that the author of the book described the April 3 People's Uprising on Jeju Island and the Ryosu Resistance - the justified resistance movement of national salvation by the south Korean people - as "atrocities," by linking them to the north. What’s more, it malignantly slandered inter-Korean cooperation and the events conducted during the June 15 era of reunification by groundlessly charging that they have "helped maintain the system in the north." [This is a reference to aid programs extended from the South to the North after the historic Inter-Korean Summit held June 13-15 2000. Many charge these programs only reward the North's bad behavior ].

[Editor's Note: According to the Korea Times, historians say the Jeju Island uprising occurred when conflicts broke out between the left-wing South Korea Labor Party and pro-U.S. politicians. The two sides clashed throughout 1947 when the labor party planned protests against a national referendum to establish a separate Korean government in the south of the peninsula. It was put down - some say brutally - by other South Korean troops, although the North claims that U.S. tropps were involved ].

The commentary goes on:

No one should overlook that anti-communist books of this type, which grossly distort history and malignantly slander the north, are openly distributed in south Korea. This is part of the sinister plot by pro-U.S. conservative forces to quell the spirit of independence and resistance to the United States, which is growing ever-stronger among adults and young people in south Korea, and to zealously incite hostility toward the north.

The publication and distribution of such an undesirable comic book is nothing but an unpardonable provocation against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. It is designed to agitate for sycophancy toward the U.S. and confrontation with fellow countrymen. At the same time, it's an act of treachery aimed at blocking national reconciliation and agitating for inter-Korean confrontation and war.

The distribution of such a large number of disturbing books to educational institutions, including kindergartens, is possible only due to the patronage, connivance and back-stage manipulation of the south's puppet authorities.

It seems that many South Koreans see the United States as more of a threat than North Korea or Japan - the country that ruled Korea with an iron hand for decades before World War II.

The Korean War began in the predawn darkness of June 25, 1950, as Kim Il Sung's heavily armed and well-trained North Korean army crossed the 38th parallel - the border between the two Koreas at the end of World War II. On October 1, in what is widely considered his crowning achievement, General Douglas MacArthur completely changed the course of the war by ordering - over nearly unanimous objections - an amphibious invasion at the port of Inchon, near Seoul.
