Iranian Leaders
Should 'Seize Chance' for Better U.S. Ties
Are we witnessing the beginning of
a true diplomatic watershed? A reading of this surprising editorial from the state-controlled
Iran News Daily would suggest that Tehran is about to take the Obama plunge.
The editorial says in part:
"War is a hideous phenomenon,
but removing Saddam Hussein and the Taliban were both positive actions carried
out by United States. … Now that the leader of the United States has taken a
positive step toward Iran, the Islamic Republic's leaders should seize on the
chance and work for a positive outcome."
Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad: In addition to seeking an American apology on Tuesday, one
of his close aides announced that he'll be running for a second term in
the spring election.
U.S. President Barack Obama
has called on Iranian leaders to “unclench their fist” in an attempt to improve
frosty ties between Tehran and Washington. At the same time, his ambassador to the
United Nations hinted at the readiness of her nation for a direct dialogue with
Iran.
How should Iranians consider
Obama’s olive branch? Such opportunities were missed before. The most
significant was when the U.S. apologized for its hostile policies during the
presidency of Mohammad Khatami. President Khatami who favored overture, but he
faced stiff opposition from hardliners within the country and the project was
forsaken.
Under the presidency of
quarrelsome Bush, no concrete opportunities presented themselves, since the
former Republican president never let go of his antagonism toward Iran.

PRESIDENT OBAMA SPEAKS TO THE
MUSLIM WORLD
Severed ties do not benefit,
but rather damage, both the U.S. and Iran. Contrary to the general belief that
welcoming a dialogue with the United States would be a sign of Iranian
weakness, relations with the world’s superpower would show Iran’s strength. The
two countries share interests in many parts of the world, including Iran’s
neighbors in Iraq and Afghanistan.

War is a hideous phenomenon,
but removing Saddam Hussein and the Taliban were both positive actions carried
out by United States.
Due to the growing level of
hostility between the two countries, the United States has set up bases in
Iran’s neighboring countries to use against the Islamic Republic in case of
confrontation. Trading barbs have brought no good to the two nations; instead,
they could have been cooperating over the past three decades in many areas.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad seeks an
apology
from the Obama Administration for past
American policy,
Now that the leader of the
United States has taken a positive step toward Iran, the Islamic Republic’s
leaders should seize the chance and work for a positive outcome.
Gone are the times for
military confrontation and severed relations. This is the age of communication and
interaction. Any country cutting itself off from the global circle will be
abandoned to its fate and it will certainly live to regret it.
