Stay or Go, Google Was Wise to Enter China

"Concern over losing face among politicians will prove too great to let Google withdraw, and Google will be willing to compromise. ... Having entered and now threatening to leave, Google has attracted a lot more attention than it would have if it had never entered in 2006."

Low and behold: The Internet company Google is not evil. For months, criticism of Google has mounted. It has been attacked for its collection of data as well as its handling of copyrights. How fortunate that there is China and it’s censorship: for now, Google is evaluating whether it should offer censored search results at all, after some suspicious hacker attacks from within the country.

Such a reaction is not just being well received in the West - and in this respect it is quite clever. But what will follow in China? Google's withdrawal from the country is highly unlikely. There will be negotiations that both the government and Google will describe as “tough.” But concern over losing face among politicians will prove too great to let Google withdraw … and Google will be willing to compromise.

Up to now, the company's China sales have amounted to only $600 million. But Google is eyeing a potential advertising market of $10 billion. Is one to leave that to Chinese competitor Baidu? One thing's for sure: having entered and now threatening to leave, Google has attracted a lot more attention than it would have if it had never entered in 2006.
