Oliver Stone Becomes a Shiite Muslim in Iran
The world's fastest growing religion just got a little bit bigger. According
to this news item from Iran's state-run Fars News Agency, the
27-year-old son of Oliver Stone - Sean Stone - has converted to Shiite Islam in the Iranian city of Isfahan. Sean, who has in the past expressed support for the Iranian system as misconstrued, didn't say why he decided to do so.
TEHRAN: During a ceremony in
the city of Isfahan on Tuesday, the son of Oliver Stone, the renowned
Oscar-winning film director, converted to Islam. Sean Stone, taking the Muslim name Ali, became a Shiite
Muslim at the ceremony in
Iran's historic city of Isfahan.
"The conversion to Islam
is not abandoning Christianity or Judaism, which I was born with. … It means I
have accepted Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and other prophets," he said.

Born to a Jewish father and
Christian mother, Stone didn't say why he wanted to convert to Islam.
Stone, who visited Iran several
months ago, said he needed to know more about Persian culture and civilization
and become familiar with Iranian traditions and rituals. He also said Iran is
one of Asia's major centers of filmmaking and that he would, "like to
introduce Persian culture and civilization to the West."
The 27-year-old filmmaker is a
Princeton University history graduate and has collaborated on many of his
father's projects, including the 2004 film Alexander. He has also
directed a handful of documentaries.
