European Union Mustn't Allow
China to Fill U.S. Military Void
"The
disproportionate price of U.S. military efforts has resulted in a lower level
of social welfare than citizens of a country with the greatest GDP in the world
deserve, and condescending criticism from Europeans, who have lived splendidly
thanks to America's sacrifice."
The United States of Barack
Obama has begun the withdrawal of its troops, and not coincidentally, this reconsideration
of its geostrategic policies coincides with a period of economic crisis.
Now is the Europe’s chance to
demonstrate its supposed military and diplomatic stature in a world in which
China hopes to fill the vacuum left by the United States.

For a century, the Americans
have dedicated themselves to resolving problems of others across the globe,
particularly on the old continent, which they rescued from two world wars and
the thorny conflict in the Balkans.
The disproportionate price of
U.S. military efforts has resulted in a lower level of social welfare than
citizens of a country with the greatest GDP in the world deserve and
condescending criticism from Europeans, who have lived splendidly thanks to America's
sacrifice.
Meanwhile, smug Europeans
have been unable to display a common military strategy, with its leaders more concerned
with issues of national competition and obtaining the next plumb posting by outmanuevering colleagues than with joint and effective military action.
But if it is incapable of
agreeing to common policies on immigration, E.coli
bacteria, the Palestinian conflict or the bailout of Greece, why would military
coordination work and better, particularly when there was always someone else ready
to pull our chestnuts out of the fire?

That scenario has now changed.
With the U.S. looking inward to better resolve its own economic and social
problems, we’ll see what Europe can do on its own, at a time when its welfare
system is crumbling and money, even for self-defense, is in short supply.
