CARACAS: President Hugo Chávez on Friday criticized the candidate for the vice presidency of the United States, Sarah Palin, for having called him a dictator, and commented that she is a "figurine" who "knows not of what she speaks."

"The poor little thing, you have to feel sorry for her ... she is a beauty queen that they dress up like a figurine," the Venezuelan leader remarked ironically of the Alaskan governor's history.

"But as Christ said, 'Pardon her, she knows not of what she speaks,'" he said, during a campaign stop in the oil-rich state of Zulia (in the West). Palin, John McCain's pick as his number two for the White House, said this week that "Chavez is a dictator," and that imposing additional sanctions on the nation of Venezuela would be one way to deal with it.

The Bolivarian leader, who maintains tense relations with what he calls "the Empire," expelled the U.S. ambassador to Caracas, Patrick Duddy in September for maneuvering to destabilize the country and repeating the now famous phrase: "Go to hell, stupid Yankees!" on numerous occasions.

But despite the diplomatic rupture, Chavez said "he's willing to talk" with the new U.S. President "whoever is the winner."

To refute Palin's vision of his socialist plans, Chavez recalled a statement by his Brazilian colleague Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva: "Lula was asked to respond to the question, 'Is Chavez a tyrant?' and he said, "But Venezuela has far too much democracy for that," recalled the president.

The Venezuelan president, who is trying to turn the fifth largest oil exporter into a "socialist state," has opined that the current financial crisis is "the death of capitalism," and he has criticized the great powers for "trying to revive something that has no life."
