U.S. Prayer Breakfast: Zapatero in the 'Kingdom of Heaven'
"The
event has already unleashed a veritable river of ink; We've laughed our heads
off over the paradox of a renowned secularist like Zapatero, an avowed enemy of
Christianism, publicly praying at an event sponsored by a conservative
Christian group dedicated to safeguarding the traditional family."
The moment has finally arrived. It's Thursday, February 4, and in the
United States they are holding a Prayer Breakfast with a very special guest:
the head of Spanish government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. It's undoubtedly
one of the most anticipated dates in recent months. And the anticipation is
justified: we all want to know to who Zapatero will pray with, what he'll say -
and what will his prayers will consist of.
The event has already
unleashed a veritable river of ink; we've laughed our heads off over the
paradox of a renowned secularist like Zapatero, an avowed enemy of
Christianism, publicly praying at an event sponsored by a conservative
Christian group dedicated to safeguarding the traditional family. But the fact
is, in seeking explanations, we're still immersed in the mystery of what
motives brought him there; not satisfied with official explanations, we ask ourselves
what the hell - excuse the expression - is this guy doing at an event of
undoubtedly religious character, which arose as an invocation to God to come to
the aid of humanity in times of difficulty? … a purpose it has maintained
during the nearly 60 years of holding the event.
José
Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and the Obama's at the National
Prayer
Breakfast in Washington: The secularist prime minister of
Spain
read from the Book of Deuteronomy and spoke of Spain's
role
in America's early history and its defense of religious freedom.
Perhaps Zapatero will unravel
the mystery himself with his prayer this afternoon … Or perhaps not, which is
more likely, because I think even he doesn’t knows what he's doing there, other
than to try and convey to the Spanish public an image, a notion that Barack
Obama distinguishes him with preferential treatment - unlike that bestowed on
other European leaders by the U.S. president. But the truth is that except from
that small group of fanatics that believe literally every word that comes from
the undocumented lips of [secretary of the Spanish
Socialist Workers' Party] Leire Pijin.
Zapatero deceives no one, especially when the country has witnessed with
amazement, the farce of Obama's aborted visit to Madrid in May, leaving the
supposed planetary summit in the mud.

[Translator's
Note: The author appears to mock the name of Leire Pajin, the secretary
of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, by changing it to Pijin. At the
time of posting, we have yet to decipher the meaning of Pijin.]
The only explanation,
therefore, is reduced to an absolute inconsistency that has led a segment of
the Spanish left to renounce its anti-Americanism and make Obama into a kind of
demi-god, a home-spun saint; and the hated United States of America into the
Kingdom of Heaven with its capital in Washington … not even New York, which
would seem more like a progressive altar. This guy, who has built his stupid
philosophy based on banalities and cheap slogans, like the time he told us not
to "ask what Obama can do for us, but what we can do for Obama," will
be praying to the president of the United States, who has been turned into a
divine one of our native progressives by the toil and grace of an illiterate
intellectual. You’ll see for yourselves.
But neither his praying in
the presence of 7,000 people who will listen without betraying their
astonishment in front of a bowl of Kelloggs cereal and a cup of watery coffee,
nor his entrusting himself to Saint Obama, will save him from his fatal
destiny. Zapatero is a drag - a cross that we Spaniards must carry as if it
were God’s punishment; and there's no prayer, pleading, invocation or begging
that can alter what is beginning to make itself known as our own
Apocalypse.

But if Zapatero is a mediocre
politician, it must be said he's quite an exceptional one. And this is why the
characterization given by José María Aznar
is so apt: “No one else has done so much harm in so little time.” For this
reason, he'll never be recognized within or without his country, because when
he's gone, he'll leave it in a mess, and his successor, perhaps Rajoy, will
have to struggle to put everything back in order. If only a result of today’s
prayer, God makes him open his eyes and take the only right decision of his
life … to leave. But I'm afraid that in the Kingdom of Heaven - the real one -
they prefer not to intervene, and I know for sure that the Almighty is
extremely scrupulous with one of the gifts he has given us: free will. We
elected him, so we have to bare his dead weight. Amen.
