Iran Seizes Iraqi Oil Field to Justify Domestic Repression

"This increases the likelihood of a military solution, whether carried out by Israel alone or with the cooperation of the Americans. … We can explain this as an attempt to open a new front and concoct a crisis to justify the use of additional domestic repression."

The danger presented by Iran's intransigent government is no secret to the average person.

The risk of a domestic storm materialized after the regime's refusal to accept the results of the presidential election and the resulting demonstrations and divisions among the ayatollahs and mullahs. It's clear that an iron fist hasn't squelched the resolve of reformers, which makes it necessary to have an alternate plan for coping with the most serious internal uprising to occur in the Islamic Republic since the Revolution.

As for threats from abroad, the first relates to the Iranian nuclear project and Tehran's stretching out of talks on a diplomatic solution. This increases the likelihood of a military solution, whether carried out by Israel alone or with the cooperation of the Americans. Even without military action, Iran may not be able to tolerate further sanctions, particularly if the Americans manage to gain the support of the Russians and Chinese in this area.

Based on these observations we can explain Iran's recent move to demand compensation from Iraq related to the Iran-Iraq War in excess of $1 trillion. In addition, they have occupied and Iraqi oil field near the border and raised the Iranian flag above it. We can explain all of this as an attempt to open a new front and concoct a crisis that would obstruct the other tracks and justify the use of additional domestic repression.

On the ideological level, it's clear that Iran is willing to sacrifice Arab Shiites for the sake of the Iranian project, otherwise, how can we explain its reversal toward the Iraqi government?

Arab Shiites [as opposed to Persian Shiites] have belatedly begun to realize that for the sake of its plans in Yemen, Lebanon, the Gulf States and finally in Iraq, where it had a hand in establishing the political system, Iran is prepared let all Shiites and Sunnis burn.

These maneuvers require Arabs to stand with Iraq against Iran's greedy ambitions.
