The 'Premeditated Campaign' to Defame Pakistan

"The message to the world is that Pakistanis are a bunch of wild cavemen out to destroy civilization. But the truth is that it's the crescent - the world of Islam - that is under attack from the cross. … The alarming issue, of course, is the tendency of the U.S. and Britain to look at South Asia through New Delhi's eyes."

Pakistan - The Nation - Original Article (English)

Prime Minister David Cameron, visiting India to boost jobs in Britain with a trade deal, has whipped up a hornet's nest in Pakistan by siding with the views of India Prime Minister Singh, who believes that that Pakistan must do more to fight terrorists.

BBC NEWS VIDEO: On eve of meeting Pakistan's president, British Prime Minster Cameron refuses to take back comments on Pakistan's terror problem, Aug. 3, 00:02:05RealVideo

THE fact that the British government, in league with the media, is intent on making a monster of the nation of Pakistan, is visible enough from a dreadful sketch of our national flag. Nothing could be more insulting than generalizing every Pakistani as an extremist. The Islamophic anti-Pakistan tendencies of The Independent in particular, and Western political circles in general, can be seen from the crescent on the flag, depicted as a bearded beast trying to devour the star. The message to the rest of the world is that Pakistanis are a bunch of wild cavemen out to destroy the civilization. But the truth is that it's the crescent - the world of Islam - that is under attack from the cross.

That this distorted cartoon has appeared on the heels of Prime Minister Cameron’s comments, which in turn came in response to WikiLeaks’ unsubstantiated reports, leave no doubt that a premeditated campaign to defame Pakistan is in play. The alarming issue, of course, is the tendency of the U.S. and Britain to look at South Asia through New Delhi's eyes. But while the barefaced impudence of John Bull [Great Britain] to tarnish Pakistan’s image has severely shocked ordinary patriotic Pakistani men and women, so has our ostrich-like leadership, which has buried its head in the sand in total disregard of the country’s sovereignty. To the detriment of its national honor, the Foreign Office took five days to summon the U.K.'s high commissioner for a less than serious dressing down.

The result of this shameful docility is that Mr. Cameron has refused to offer any apology and is hell-bent on sticking to his slanderous comments. Unfortunately, riding roughshod over public feelings and the outcry over this round of undiplomatic mudslinging, President Zardari’s decided to visit the U.K., meet its premiere and paper over the cracks, which will serve no purpose other than to lower the stature of Pakistan even further. By not calling off the visit, President Zardari has infuriated the ordinary Pakistani and is hinting to hostile Western leaders that they're free to humiliate the country. Even the flood disaster couldn't prevent this non-state presidential visit to Britain.

Furthermore, to see Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi play devil’s advocate by referring to Cameron’s comments as a slip of the tongue was totally dismaying. Apart from drone attacks, this apologetic posturing will certainly sow the seeds of additional trouble in the days to come. The pity is that those at the helm seem least bothered about it.
