On Iran, the West Finally Finds its Voice

Only last week, Western
governments were following events in Tehran with bated breath. U.S. President
Barack Obama even raised a few eyebrows when he commented
that there were no real differences between President Mahmud Ahmadinejad and
his challenger Mir Hussein Mousavi.
Since the uncompromising
appearance by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei
during Friday prayers, this collective tactical-verbal dithering is hopefully
well and truly behind us. Following France, Britain and the U.S., even Chancellor
Angela Merkel has demanded a recount of the votes, after initially calling
Khamenei’s challenge to his own people merely "very disappointing."

The answer by the Iranian
regime wasn’t long in the coming - and well in line with geopolitical role
favored by Tehran. The blame lies squarely with Western television and foreign
countries. If Iran wasn’t surrounded by dark forces, spies and omnipotent
enemies, one could continue to peacefully build the Persian-Islamic version of
"ideal democracy".
Even a respected man like Parliament
[Majlis] Speaker Ali Larijani appears unsure about what direction to shout "disgrace"
after the turbulent last few days. Four days ago he protested to the supreme leader against nightly attacks on
students in their university dormitories. On Sunday he finally took Germany,
France and Britain to task after the leaders of those governments condemned precisely
the violence that the Iranian regime is directing against its own people.
